Many of our guests have commented that our apartment is shaped like a Boat. Its shape is hull-like, I suppose. Our building was constructed in 1642, a year before Louis XIV was crowned king of France.
Loft flat. 3 bedrooms upstairs 1 bedroom downstairs.
Total: 4 bedrooms, 1 Shower room upstairs with WC, 1 Bath, 2nd WC downstairs. Our building is situated in the St. Paul quarter of the Marais.
History: Originally a convent during the 14th century, the location of the building was picked by the doctor of King Charles V to erect his palace, named Hôtel Saint-Pol. There is little remains of it (a wall of the former church on the rue Saint-Paul)
The building is located in the former courtyard of the king’s quarters, where he kept Lions (hence the name of the street rue des Lions-Saint-Paul). The location was also convenient because it was near the river (then the most efficient means of transportation), and the king could take his horse and hunt in Vincennes, where he had the famous castle built. Eventually, his son left the palace to build the original Louvre because the Seine was too smelly. The Hôtel Saint Pol was left in ruins for more than a century, until 1540, when King François I auctioned off this plot of land to various aristocrats. The present building, Hotel Charmannet, belonged to a wine-producing family from Bordeaux. The apartment is the reunion of various maids’ rooms, and as late as 1914, one maid was
killed by the German big gun (Big Berta) because of the proximity of the Archives district, which was, and still is, a big telecommunications centre.
